About This Artwork

A breathtaking landscape capturing the dramatic interplay of a fiery sunset and cool teal sky, divided by a lone tree silhouette. Signed 'UKA' by the artist, this painting pulses with energy — horizontal bands of crimson, magenta, orange, and deep purple sweep across the canvas like nature's own brush strokes.

The bare tree stands as a contemplative figure against this cosmic display, its delicate branches reaching into the burning sky. The contrasting warm and cool halves of the canvas create a powerful visual tension that draws the eye across the entire composition.

This work explores the liminal moment between day and night — that fleeting instant when the sun surrenders to the horizon and the sky becomes a living canvas of impossible colours. The solitary tree serves as both witness and metaphor: rooted in the earth yet reaching toward the infinite, it embodies the human experience of standing between what was and what comes next.

The palette moves from deep teal and midnight blue at the top through explosive bands of orange, vermillion, and hot pink, finally settling into rich purple and crimson near the ground. Each colour transition is handled with bold, confident brushwork that gives the painting an almost tactile quality — you can feel the heat of the setting sun radiating from the surface.

Inspiration

This painting was born from a specific evening in the Aravalli foothills outside Jaipur, where Upen witnessed a sunset so vivid it seemed to set the entire landscape ablaze. The lone dhok tree — leafless in the summer heat — became the emotional anchor of the composition. 'I wanted to capture not just what the sky looked like,' Upen recalls, 'but what it felt like to stand there, completely alone, watching the world transform.'

Creative Process

Working from quick plein-air sketches and colour studies made on location, Upen developed the final composition over three weeks in his studio. The painting was built in layers — starting with a tonal underpainting in burnt sienna, then blocking in the major colour bands wet-on-wet to achieve the luminous blending effect. The tree was the last element added, painted with a fine rigger brush in a single focused session to maintain the spontaneity of its branching silhouette.

Artistic Impact

Sunset Solitude was selected for the National Contemporary Art Exhibition in New Delhi (2024) and received the Jury's Commendation for 'Outstanding Use of Colour.' The painting has been featured in Art India Magazine and was shortlisted for the Lalit Kala Akademi's annual landscape award. It has become one of Upen's most recognised works, frequently requested for fine art prints and reproductions.

“When I first saw Sunset Solitude, I stood in front of it for nearly ten minutes. The colours are so alive they seem to shift as you move. It's rare to find a landscape painting that's both this bold and this emotionally honest. This piece has transformed our living room into something sacred.”
